About | The Historic Sunset Camp was built-in 1930. This camp houses about 300 people in tin cabins and tents in one room. For many families, the field offered a safe place to stay, resulting in a strong community that formed its school, which later became the Weedpatch camp's foundation. Initially, the camp consisted of canvas tents on plywood platforms for residents and permanent buildings. The old buildings are located in a fenced area at the site's northeast corner. Three buildings remain from the camp that makes up this National Register of Historic Places property: the community hall, the post office, and the library. It has more than twenty full-time nurses, physicians, dentists, social workers, maintenance workers, and management personnel. |
