| About | Smithills Hall is one of the oldest and best-preserved manor houses, and it is listed as a grade 1 manor house. In 1963 the oldest part of the hall was opened as the museum, and some of the Victorian extensions were added to the museum in the 1990s. It was built on a formal terrace, surrounded by parkland. The great hall is the oldest part of the structure built in the early-14th century. The oldest part is constructed by the timber frames, and the stonework is done by the roughly coursed rubblestone. Smithills Hall provides guided tours by professional volunteer guides during the opening hours. Visitors can enjoy the museum at free charge. |
