AboutHylton Castle is a stone castle constructed in the 1400s. The wealthy Sir William Hylton built this distinctive and highly decorative gatehouse-tower of a castle. Originally the castle was built from wood shortly. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, it was reconstructed in stone. Hylton Castle has undergone substantial improvements to its interior and exterior and remained the Hylton family's principal seat. One of the castle's key features is the collection of heraldic devices found predominantly on the west façade, which was preserved from the initial construction of the castle. The English Heritage is now managing the Hylton Castle. The castle, along with the chapel, is listed as a Grade I listed building.
