About | Bessie Surtees House is the name of two merchants' houses built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The house is an example of Jacobean domestic architecture. Later in 1978, the housed was brought by Newcastle City Council bought the building. It is home to English Heritage and Historic England's North East regional branch. Visitors can tour this beautiful mid-17th-century Tudor house, which is best known as the site of the romantic elopement in 1772 between Bessie Surtees and John Scott, the future Lord Chancellor of England. The house provides an exhibition that tells the history of the buildings. Bessie Surtees House was listed as a Grade II building. Currently, the house has offices, an exhibition space and splendid period interiors. |
