About | Grey's Monument is a famous combination of Earl Grey tea, and it is listed as a Grade II building. The head of the sculpture was knocked to the ground by a lightning bolt in July 1941, during World War II. It consists of a statue of Lord Grey standing atop a Roman Doric column on a pedestal of local sandstone, 135-foot-high in total. Sculptor Roger Hedley created a new head in 1947, based on the saved pieces of the original. The monument was initially on a traffic island and enclosed by railings; the railings are no longer. Guides can offer a commentary on the past of the monument and the surrounding area. The large base of the monument is a common location and serves as a spot for buskers and political activities. Visitors can enjoy Grainger City's historical landmarks Georgian architecture. |
