About | Basingwerk Abbey is a ruined abbey which l listed as a grade. The abbey was founded by the 4th Earl of Cheste, Ranulf de Gernon. In the 12th century, the monastery belonged to the Cistercian Order. The oldest portion of the abbey is the 12th-century chapter house, with remains of the benches where monks sat for daily readings. The place is known for its nature walks, educational activities, habitats, and bird watching. A complimentary guide/brochure is available from the visitor centre (open every day from 10 am to 4.30 pm from 1st April-3rd November). Car parking is available. This Abbey has a wheelchair accessible entrance. It affords free admission. |
