The place is situated on top of the narrow, high peninsula formed by a sharp bend in the River Wear. The castle contains an immense Great Hall, created in the early 14th century by Bishop Antony Bek. The castle's most original parts date from around 1072 when William the Conqueror ordered a new fort. It's a world heritage site that brought international recognition to this unique, historic and scenic location. It offers free admission to Infant's & Campus Cardholders at Durham University. |
