About | Finchale Priory is a building that l listed as a grade. It was a Benedictine Priory in the 13th century. Finchale Priory is sometimes referred to as Finchale Abbey. The building was founded on the hermitage of St Godric, a merchant and a retired sailor, who settled here after a life of adventure and travel. In the early twelfth century, Godric came to live on the eventual site of the Finchale Priory, building a hermitage dedicated to St John the Baptist. They took a picnic, and their grandsons enjoyed playing at the riverside. This place is stunning, with lots of walking to be done and a cafe on site. They offer free admission. |
