About | Chandragiri Fort is a mediaeval fort in Chandragiri, Tirupati, that was erected in the 11th century. Immadi Narasinga Yadavaraya, who ruled from Narayanavanam, is supposed to have built the stronghold about 1000 CE. In 1376, the Vijayanagara dynasty captured it after three centuries of Yadavaraya dominance. Following a defeat at the Battle of Talikota in 1565, they relocated their capital from Hampi to Chandragiri, where the fort rose to prominence; it was then annexed into the Mysore Kingdom by the Sultan of Golconda in 1646 and Hyder Ali in 1782. The citadel is divided into two parts: the Lower Fort and the Upper Fort, which cover a total of 25 acres. To the south of a hill, the Lower Fort stretches down along lowlands. The ramparts built with cyclopean masonry, a few watchtowers, and bastions with arched parapets may be seen at the Upper Fort, which is positioned on top of the hill. |
