About | Fort Scratchley is a former coastal defence station. It is the only surviving operational military fort in Australia. It is presently a museum built in 1882 to protect the city from a possible Russian attack. It is situated on Flagstaff Hill, viewing the Tasman Sea and the Hunter River. It also provides a unique 360-degree view of the city. Fort Scratchley has two natural features that stand out. Height provided a lookout for the area; and the seams of coal around its foundation. This 1800s fortress features military history exhibits, tunnel tours, and daily cannon firings. There is also a small park and playground near the entrance and some good parking spots nearby. |
