About	Dr. Joseph L. Koen received his medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine. He obtained his internship and residency from Duke University Medical Center. He has been in practice for over 28 years. Dr. Joseph L. Koen specializes in performing brain tumor surgeries, both benign and malignant. He has advanced training in skull-base approaches and CyberKnife and Varian True Beam stereotactic radiosurgery. He began the technique of awake craniotomy and brain mapping to Hampton Roads in 1999. Dr. Joseph was the first to implanted chemotherapy for malignant brain tumors and was a study investigator for this procedure. Dr. Joseph is an active member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and Society of Lateral Access Surgery.
