About | Scott Joplin House State Historic Site features museum displays that depict Joplin's life as a testament to his creativity and hard work. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources maintains the house and its surroundings as a state historic site. It is a two-story T-shaped brick house with a gabled roof with side parapet walls and engaged chimneys. Gas lamps, calcimine paint, and second-hand furnishings recreate the humble days of the St. Louis years of Joplin. The working player piano lets tourists listen to ragtime piano rolls in the music room. The piano links to the Scott Joplin house, as the piano company has also published music. There are rooms downstairs with glassed-in displays depicting Scott Joplin's history and ragtime songs. The upper floor accommodates 40 people and 60 people on the ground floor. It is significant as the only known surviving home associated with African-American composer Scott Joplin. |
