| About | Virginia State Capitol is the first Roman architecture to be renovated in America and the first American public construction to design a classic temple. The State Capitol construction began in 1785 and was completed in 1788. The building also served as the Capitol of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. It has various monuments located throughout the 12-acre grounds. The place has fantastic interior designs, and colors from 1910 have been replicated in the house and senate chambers. Capitol Square's well-landscaped public areas include many old and newly dedicated statues honoring a wide variety of notable Virginians. |
