About | Eastern State Penitentiary, also known as ESP, is a former American prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The building was designed by John Haviland and opened on October 25, 1829. It was the largest and most expensive public structure ever erected in the United States. The prison is currently a U.S. National Historic Landmark, open to the public as a museum. Eastern State provides special school tours that meet many academic standards. It also affords guide-led group tours. The jail was housed many of America's most infamous lawbreakers, including the Sutton slick willie and al Capone scarface. Complementary lesson plans are available, which are very useful for kids and adults. |
