The York Castle Museum was established by Dr John Kirk, a doctor from Pickering, North Yorkshire. The museum holds in a former debtors' prison and an adjoining former women's prison which is Grade I listed. It houses his remarkable collection of social history representing the county's daily life. The museum features children under five years of age a variety of programs and events to help them participate in collections and exhibits. The York Castle Museum also provides stimulating, engaging, and hands-on learning experiences that directly support the National Curriculum. It offers free entry for York residents children.
