About | Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum is preserving the remains of Segedunum. It is one of the most thoroughly excavated fort sites anywhere in the Roman Empire. It was built at the eastern end of the Wall of Hadrian near the banks of the Tyne River, forming the easternmost section of the wall. The fort was in service for about 300 years as a garrison, from about 122 AD to almost 400 AD. Initially, the Roman wall ended at Pons Aelius to secure the river crossing at Pons Aelius. The wall was later expanded more east in about 127AD. A museum features objects of interest discovered when excavated, and a large observation tower overlooks the area. |
