About | The Bowes Railway was opened to transport coal in 1826. Renowned engineer George Stephenson designed it. The Bowes Railway was entirely completed in 1855 with the fifteen miles long. The railway handled more than 1 million tons of coal per year and remained virtually unchanged until 1968. The railway is actively renewing its display materials and aims to show visitors visual photos of places that are difficult to navigate. The Bowes Railway is the only working standard gauge rope hauled railway in the world that has been preserved. It also has an outdoor picnic area. |
