| About | Bargate is an iconic building located in the middle of the Old part of Southampton. It is an impressive medieval gatehouse built out of flint and stone by the Normans in 1180. It contains a wealth of character and heritage through its fascinating remains, monuments and buildings. The Bargate is part of the protective wall system protecting the city from the 1300s. The building is situated just off the High Street close to the WestQuay Shopping Centre. The medieval Guildhall is above the gateway itself and is used for council meetings, banquets and other civic business. |
