About | ' Craignethan Castle ' is a destroyed castle in South Lanarkshire. Craignethan Castle was built in the first half of the 16th century and excellent early example of a sophisticated artillery fortification. Despite its state-of-the-art artillery defences, the castle is an exceptional fortress-residence that was overthrown within 50 years of its construction. Craignethan Castle poses in a stunning setting with wild surroundings providing glorious panoramas. There is a lovely walk outside the castle down the gorge. Free entry for a child under five and member/explorer pass holder. Their castle's extensive defences include a caponier that vaulted artillery chamber, unique in Britain. |
