About | Roche Abbey is beautifully set in a peaceful and picturesque wooded valley that was founded in 1147. It gives excellent historical insight into the Abbey and the local area and offers outstanding views of surrounding areas. It has one of the complete ground plans of any English Cistercian monastery, laid out as excavated foundations. The story of the pillaging of Roche, reported by the son of an eyewitness, is among the most vivid documents of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The Abbey is part of the English Heritage group, which promotes all the other historical sites in England. It also has a gift shop which sells hot drinks and enough information panels to its visitors. Roche Abbey is a lovely place for a picnic, and there are pleasant walks around the site and the surrounding area. |
