About | Southsea Castle was part of a series of fortifications built by King Henry VIII along the Portsmouth coast to protect the country from invaders. The monument is one of the iconic and unique historical memorials situated in Portsmouth, UK. It is an artillery fort constructed formerly by Henry VIII on Portsea Island, Hampshire, in 1544. In the 19th Century, a tunnel was built to defend the Castle moat. This fascinating site is where the king watched his favourite warship, the Mary Rose, tragically capsize and sink in 1545. Tourists can explore the castle, caponier and ramparts with its unique design. You can also enjoy the panoramic views from the top of the Keep of the Isle of Wight & ships on the Solent. The castle is a historical attraction, which offers charge-free entry between March and October each year. Trained and well-mannered Assistance dogs are welcome within the museum and shop. |
