About | Lochranza Castle is a ruined L-plan tower house, remodelled in the 16th century, although it incorporates much of a 13th or 14th-century hall-house. Lochranza was probably owned by the MacSweens but was used as a hunting lodge by the kings of Scots. The main block has three storeys and an attic, while the wing rose two storeys higher and was capped by a watchtower. Lochranza Castle is a building incorporating a rare hall-house of the 1200s. The castle is dated from the 13th century. The castle was the model for the castle in The Adventures of Tintin comic The Black Island, for the English translation in the 1960s when the drawings were modernised. It affords free admission. |
