AboutChester Castle is the administrative centre of Chester's Earldom. The castle was built in 1070 by Hugh d'Avranches, the second Earl of Chester. It is in the southwest part of the walled city. The castle is of the most remarkable features of a timber-framed town in the UK. Parliamentary forces attacked the Chester Castle, and in later of eighteen-century castle's fabric had deteriorated. At present, the castle is a Grade I building. The chapel within the castle has items of Norman architecture. It consists of a vast entablature, flanked by temple-like lodges, supported on widely spaced Doric columns. Chester Castle offers free admission for visitors.
