AboutGateway of India is an arch monument built during the 20th century in Mumbai, India. It is one of India's most iconic attractions in the city of Mumbai. The monument was erected to commemorate King George V and Queen Mary's landing at Apollo Bunder on their visit to India in 1911. It was built in Indo-Saracenic style; the foundation stone for India's Gateway was laid on 31 March 1911. The structure is an arch made of basalt, 26 metres (85 feet) high. The Gateway was later used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India for the Viceroys and Mumbai's new Governors. Visitors can see the vast Arabian sea and the magnificent Indian hotel group, Hotel Taj, now over a century old. Gateway of India is around 2.5 km far from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal & 2.4 km from Churchgate Railway Station. The monument has also been referred to as the Taj Mahal of Mumbai and is the city’s top tourist attraction. Gateway of India affords free entry for visitors and can be visited 24 hours.
