About | Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site is the original building on the site, was built between 1814 and 1823, and is acknowledged as one of the oldest surviving houses in Northern Ontario. Charles Oakes Ermatinger constructed this house for his wife and children. After the Ermatinger family left, the house was used by its succeeding occupants as a mission, courthouse, tavern, post office, hotel, dance hall, tea room and apartment building. This house was considered a national historic site in 1957. It was built by using local stones and timber and facing st. Marty's river. It was deemed significant for its time and was an imposing landmark at the time of its construction. |
