About | The Lévis Forts is a sequence of 3 forts positioned at the South Shore of the Saint Lawrence River in Lévis, Quebec. The first one was built by the British Army (1865-1872) and private enterprises (1865-1869). The Lévis Forts were designed to protect Quebec City against an American invasion. The place brings them back to the French and British governments when Quebec played a decisive role in the colony's defence. Fort No. 1 is the last in a series of three detached forts attesting to the remarkable technological innovations of the time. Guided tours are offered of the casemates, underground chambers and tunnels, and tourists can take self-guided tours of the outdoor rolling bridge, powder magazines, terreplein, and caponiers. It affords free admission for youth. |
