About	St. Mary's Basilica is a Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral serving the Halifax community. It is one of the largest Catholic churches in the Archdiocese of Halifax. The church was built using wood at the initial stage, and a stone structure replaced it by 1820. The church was expanded and altered over time; it was expanded to its present size beginning in 1869. The Gothic canopy above the tabernacle is the polychrome spire that was part of the high altar from 1865-1965. St. Mary's Basilica also features Norman and Germanic design elements. By December 1917, the church was heavily damaged, and the stained glass windows were shattered in the Halifax Explosion. The church was restored, and masses were celebrated. St. Mary's Basilica is an architectural masterpiece designated as the National Historic Site of Canada in 1997. St. Mary’s Cathedral holds a great historical and liturgical connection to the Church of Halifax.
