AboutFremantle Prison is a former Australian prison and World Heritage Site in Fremantle, Western Australia. Fremantle Prison is sometimes referred to as Fremantle Gaol or Fremantle Jail. The six-hectare site includes the prison cellblock, perimeter walls, gatehouse, cottages, and tunnels. The Prison was built as a convict barracks in the 19th century and continued use until 1991. Since 1991, Fremantle Prison has been conserved as a recognised heritage site, and various restoration works have been undertaken. The Prison is now one of Western Australia’s most fascinating and significant cultural attractions and is open for guided tours.
