About	St Paul’s Cathedral stands on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. A foundation stone was laid, and the construction of the cathedral started in 1891. The Cathedral was completed in 1896, and worship has taken place on this site every day since then. It is an oasis of peace at the heart of the world’s most liveable city, where many thousands come to pray, reflect and share in the peace and beauty of this sacred space. St Paul’s Cathedral stands on the traditional lands of Kulin, which was designed by William Butterfield, who made the design as Gothic Revival. It is Victoria’s most-visited sacred place, with over 400,000 visitors a year. The church pipe organ was commissioned and installed by T. C. Lewis, one of the most prominent organ builders. St Paul’s Cathedral faced multiple restorations and installed coloured glass lanterns and windows by the late 19th century.
